On September 15, 2021, the Monterey Bay Air Resources District (MBARD) Board authorized the initiation of MBARD’s first Electric Bicycle Incentive Program (e-BIP). Through this incentive program, MBARD is offering $1,000 to low-income applicants in Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties to purchase a Class 1, 2, or 3 electric bicycle in the price range of $1,000 - $4,000.
According to Richard Stedman, Air Pollution Control Officer for the Monterey Bay Air Resources District, “As e-bike technology advances and more models become available, e-bikes can be a useful way to displace automobile trips for commuting to work or school and for running errands. MBARD encourages the use of pedal and electric power to reduce smog forming and global warming emissions while promoting the health and wellbeing of our community.”
Applicants are required to be low-income qualified prior to applying. Eligible e-bikes must be purchased from a bike shop within Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties on or after 9/28/2021. Details of the e-BIP and the on-line application can be found at the MBARD website: https://www.mbard.org/e-bike-incentive-program
